About Me

Engineer at heart. I’ve worn a few hats—software engineer, ML engineer, AI research engineer—but the common thread is a love for hard problems, whether they’re hard because of scale or just inherently deeply complex.

I also write about AI and engineering at AI by Mai in a casual, practical way—no hype, just the interesting bits.

Past work spans ML models for cybersecurity, industrial control systems, and marketplace optimization and automation—from LLMs to real-time system optimization, across both platform and feature teams.

What I’m Focused On Now

Last updated: March 2026

Inspired by Derek Sivers’ /now page.

Current questions:

  • Where’s the line between AI assistance and actually getting better at something? I don’t have a clean answer yet.
  • SSecurity × AI: enormous opportunity, but the risk surface is just as large. It’s the space I keep coming back to.

Currently learning:

  • The security/AI intersection — still early days, moves fast
  • AI evaluation — harder than it looks, more important than most teams treat it
  • Agentic patterns — what actually works vs. what’s just demos

Currently reading:

I always read one technical and one non-technical book:

  • AI Engineering by Chip Huyen
  • Quantum Leaps by Hugh Barker
